My current job offers the flexibility to engage in governance, which I find important and meaningful.
What inspired you to take on the role of a governor? Any personal experiences, values, or goals that motivated you?
Being part of the SEMH provision board, I've seen schools support and learn from each other, which is incredibly valuable. Governance reviews help clarify our roles and improve governance. Governors bring unique expertise and open doors to valuable networks, enhancing the school's capabilities. For instance, I work on a mental health project where a governor with a public health background provided valuable insights into project management cycles. This expertise is crucial for projects that require specialized knowledge. Additionally, my experience with alternative provisions and working directly in schools has allowed me to contribute meaningfully to various educational initiatives.
What advice would you give to individuals considering becoming a governor?
Be open-minded about what you can offer and honest about your skills. Connecting the school with your network can be very impactful. Time commitment can be a challenge, but flexibility and honesty about your availability are key. Don't be afraid to mention your role as a governor in conversations; you never know where it might lead.
