A Bexley careers advisor working in schools across London South East Academies Trust has been named as Kent Careers Teacher of the Year, beating off competition from over 1200 nominees from Bexley, Kent and Medway.

Based at Horizons Academy in Bexley, an alternative provision for 5-16 year olds, Amie Power (27) was presented with both the area award for Bexley Careers Teacher of the Year and the overall title for Careers Advisor of the Year at the Kent Teacher of the Year Awards last week.

The award recognises Amie’s contribution to high quality careers teaching and support. Her innovative approach to reducing the number of NEETS has resulted in securing destinations for over 98% of year 11 students. Amie has achieved this success by creating the schools’ Career Delivery Plan and individual resource packs, as well motivating students via inspirational 1-2-1 sessions.

In addition, Amie was commended for developing a support programme for post-16 students, ensuring they sustain their placements and remain in education, training and/or employment until the age of 18.

Congratulating Amie on her success, Executive Head Teacher at London South East Academies, Jo Southby, says:

“Since joining our team Amie’s impact has been staggering. We have seen a huge reduction of NEETS over this time – from 86% three years ago to just 16%. Amie works tirelessly to help our students make choices and secure positive pathways when they move on from our schools.

“I am very proud of all Amie has achieved. She is an asset to our organisation and her skills, knowledge and enthusiasm are welcomed by our young people. Definitely a deserving winner of this award!”

Delighted with her award, Amie says:

“I am absolutely overwhelmed to have received this award. Delivering careers advice and supporting young people to achieve their full potential within the world of work and the community is not only rewarding but something I am very passionate about.

“It’s wonderful to be recognised for the fantastic work that has been delivered but the successful outcomes that have been achieved would not have been possible without such a supportive manager, team and amazing students – so my thanks goes to all of them!”

The annual Kent Teacher of the Year Awards mark the vital contribution that teaching staff make to the community, recognising the expertise and dedication of outstanding teachers.
